When I was in high school, I spent most of my time playing video games. I’d spend hours, days, even weeks at a time playing a game… stopping only to eat and sleep sometimes when my body felt like it would collapse. The games would suck me in and keep me there.
I used to enjoy the role playing games the most. You know, the super nerdy ones. The ones that would take weeks to complete where you’d start with very little and slowly work your way up to becoming stronger and stronger until you could finally beat the game.
I’d make money for my character in the game, buy clothes and weapons. The game would allow me to build up my character’s skills like the art of speech, the ability to run businesses, build things, and all kinds of other stuff.
It wasn’t until my early 20′s when I began to consciously realize that I could do this exact same thing in the real world. Yeah, I mean, it takes a lot longer and it’s a lot harder. But, in the real world, when you develop your skills, you keep them.
When you take the time to develop the different areas of your life in the real world, the results are a lot more rewarding. And, there’s no shut off. There’s no point where you have to leave the real world to go into a fantasy world where you have no skills.
You may have to start at the beginning with new skills that you want to learn but if you’ve already mastered one skill, it’s actually easier to master others.
And when you develop yourself personally, your entire outlook on your self and your life completely change. The more competent you are at anything, the easier it is to feel good about yourself, the more compliments you’ll receive from others, the easier it will be to have an empowering self-esteem and greater sense of confidence.
When you start mastering different areas of your life, you’ll begin to notice that everything changes. If you work on your physical self, you’ll notice that it’s easier to do most things. You’ll move around more easily. You’ll be able to work harder and longer. Your capacity for stress gets larger.
If you develop your focus, you’ll notice that it’s easier to learn anything you want to learn. Your ability to be consciously aware of where you’re making mistakes and how to correct them will dramatically improve. Your intelligence will improve. Your ability to listen and engage yourself in conversations more fully will dramatically increase.
And these are only a few of the areas. Every area that you work on will increase your ability to live your life more fully. Do you take care of yourself? How is your physical shape? Do you make sure to nourish your body with vital nutrients and eat foods that promote a steady blood sugar level?
Most people get old before their time. Most people deteriorate mentally, physically, and emotionally because they don’t consciously take the time out to strengthen the most important areas of their lives.
How Does This Relate to Passion?
How are you going to live a passionate life if your blood sugar is constantly shooting up and down? How are you going to be inspired if your body is so weak and frail that you run out of energy just moving around? How are you going to problem solve and figure out ways to make your dreams come true if your mind hasn’t learned anything new and you haven’t been constantly feeding it and using it in a way that makes it ready for any challenges that you face?
Most people spend 8 hours a day at a job where they are just going through the motions. I hear people tell me all the time that they aren’t creative people. That’s not true. The problem is that they haven’t used their mind in a creative way for so long that their mind forgets how to be creative.
If you want to live with passion, you need to constantly be developing all areas of your life. You need to constantly build your capacity to live your life. The higher your capacity is in each area, the easier it will be for you to overcome adversity, the longer it will take for you to get tired, the more you can take on before it starts to affect you in a way that forces you to rejuvenate yourself.
How are you going to follow your dreams if every obstacle you come across takes all your energy away? Sometimes you’re going to be in a place where you feel like everything is against you. Sometimes, you’re going to think that nothing you do makes a difference in getting you to where you want to go.
You need to continuously work on your own self mastery. With technology improving as rapidly as it does, we have all of these new gadgets in our lives. We’re constantly upgrading our phones and cars and computers. How often does your computer need upgrades to the software that it has within it?
Self mastery is about upgrading your mind and body the same way that you upgrade your computer. Most people have a potential that is far above anything they use in their lives. You can completely transform yourself and your life. It doesn’t matter where you are right now.
Invest in yourself. Read books that help you live your life more fully. Listen to audio programs that inspire and motivate you towards living an amazing life. Go to seminars and workshops, conferences and retreats that reprogram the way your mind works so that you’re consciously and unconsciously setting your life up for success.
You can even go through the same books and same programs and learn new things each time you do it. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars to go to the same personal development programs several times just because I got something completely new out of it each time I went.
Most people won’t do this. Most people settle for whatever they get in life.
Why Would I Want to Change Myself? Shouldn’t I Just Feel Good About Who I Am?
Most people learn things in their childhood that don’t serve them in their adult lives. Many just think this is how they are. They think that this is who they are and they don’t want to change who they are.
I’d like to propose the idea to you that this is not who you are. You are living with a persona. You’ve developed habits and ideas and behaviors but those don’t define you. What you have done in the past is not who you are.
Sure, if you’ve spent years or decades doing the same thing over and over, it leaves a trail in your brain for how you might do things in the future. But that’s just programming. You can change it any time you want to.
Self mastery is about pulling that layer of unwanted behaviorisms, that cloud of self sabotaging belief systems and self destructive processes out of the way. It’s about exposing who you truly are.
Deep down inside of you, there’s a energy waiting to be let out. There’s a part of you that is true and authentic. It is confident and strong. It is a part of you that makes dreams happen. It doesn’t stop at obstacles. It doesn’t doubt itself and it doesn’t feel like it is valueless.
This part of your knows that it deserves whatever you want in your life. It is hungry and free. But the only way to pull that part of yourself out is to invite it out. You have to get rid of all the clutter, all the distractions that interfere with you being courageous and unreasonable to the point that you’d stop at nothing to have what you want in your life.
If you don’t develop yourself and allow the part of you that is eager and hungry to live your life out of you, you’ll end up settling for whatever is in front of you. You won’t like it. But, you’ll end up rationalizing it and coming up with reasons why you don’t get more from yourself and your world. But this isn’t for you.
Develop yourself in your life. Create a plan to better your health. The body that you have is the only thing that is allowing you to experience your life. Take care of it and make sure it is in optimal condition. Set eating and exercise habits up so that you are full of energy and life.
Learn about how to have great relationships. Relationships are what drive you to live more fully. Humans are pack animals. We are designed to be in relationships with other people. You can feel when someone is sad, when someone is angry, when someone is happy or inspired. You feel it within yourself.
Deliberately choose what you think. If you don’t make a conscious decision to think positive, uplifting thoughts, your mind will naturally choose negative ones. Create a habit of thinking in a way that makes you see the greatness all around you. Ask yourself questions that develop your self-esteem and inspire confidence within you.
Your life is worth taking care of yourself and developing yourself to reach your full potential. At some point, life is going to throw some major obstacles in your way. You’re going to be confused and disoriented. You’re not going to know what to do. The better you can prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally for this, the easier it will be for you to come out on top.
Be ready for anything and everything that will come at you. The bigger your dreams are, the more will be thrown at you to overcome. Be relentlessly pushing towards taking yourself and your life to the next level. You won’t regret it.
Until next time,
