Matt here from Live With Passion Now. Are you currently setting up your life to so that you spend your time doing the things that are most important to you? Leveraging your time doing by focusing on what you value most is the fastest way to start living with passion immediately.
Figure Out What’s Most Important to You
The first thing that you need to do in order to prioritize your life is to figure out what is most important to you in your life… your values. By values, I mean, what you value most in your life. If you don’t know what is most important to you, you certainly won’t spend your doing those things. If you aren’t spending most of your time doing what you value most, you’re probably losing a lot of the passion you could have in your life.
This is obviously a major problem but one that most people hardly do anything to resolve. I’ve been there a couple time in my life though. In our current society, we’re constantly being pulled in directions that aren’t necessarily where we want to go with our lives. Society, our family, the media, and typically our environment is set up in a way that distracts us and creates false urgency towards things that really don’t have much significance or meaning in our lives.
Its not that there’s something wrong with us or our society but that most of the rules and influences that we’re subjected to are designed by people who have their own best interests in mind, not ours. This probably isn’t much of a surprise to you. Most advertising, media, and political campaigns are known to be full of influencial materials that have an agenda or are self serving for the company or people who run them.
The point is to deliberately and consciously create a direction for yourself and your life. Its time to put away society’s compass and pull out your own compass and begin living your life based on YOUR terms, YOUR values, and YOUR passion. You need to figure yourself out. You need to find happiness for yourself first.
Wouldn’t that be selfish of me to only focus on what I care about?
That seems like a logical conclusion to derive from the meaning of working on yourself. I actually thought that once so I can understand where that question may come from.
When I was a personal trainer, I would occassionally run into people, when I was out at parties or something, who thought that personal training was selfish. They thought that if you spent time focusing on making yourself healthy, you must be neglecting what others. You must not be contributing to other people’s lives because you’re spending way too much time focusing on yourself.
I would hate to break it to them but this is completely backwards thinking. The truth is, we need you to be a healthy person. And when I say we, I mean the rest of the world. We need you to be healthy, to be passionate, and to be happy with your life. We need it more than we need you to try to contribute to other people’s lives. Let me tell you why…
How are you going to create great things in the world if you’re always sick… if you’re always depressed… if you hate your life and you hate what you do for work… how are you going to make anything better? The answer is that you’re not. People think that contributing to others means that you need to neglect yourself. That’s just crazy. Its the butterfly effect.
When you figure yourself out, when you figure out your health, your work, your passion, you will affect and infect everyone around you with your strength and positivity. You will become a beacon of strength to everyone in your life. People will look to you for lifting themselves up and the ones who want to pull you back down probably don’t need to be your friends anyway.
If you want to create great things with your life, if you want to create great things in this world, if you want to create great things for others, create greatness in yourself first. This needs to be your number one priority. You need to figure yourself out first. You need to start living by YOUR values. You need to start saying “NO” to opportunities that pull you away from what is most important to you in your life right now.
This is the only way you will find passion. This is the only way you will create greatness in this world. Otherwise you’ll be a slave to the system and you’ll be too bogged down with urgent things that you don’t care about and neverending tasks that pull you away from what really to you in your life. Don’t let this happen to you.
Even if you’ve spent years getting yourself involved in something that you don’t care about, it simply doesn’t matter. Its not how long you’ve been doing it that matters, its how long you’re willing to keep doing it that does. How much longer are you willing to continue doing something that’s bad for you just because you’ve invested time, money, energy, or whatever in it? The real question shouldn’t be how much you’ve invested in something but how can you get out of it and how quickly can you do it. Figure out what is most important to you in your life and begin working on this immediately and drop everything that isn’t.
When to Engage in Your Values
Next, you need to figure out when to do the things you value most in life.
Didn’t you just get done telling me that I should always do the things that are most important to me?
Absolutely! But there’s more than one part to this. First, you don’t have one thing that you value most in your life… you probably have several. Neglecting all others and just focusing on one isn’t very balanced and won’t give you what you’re looking for. So, after figuring out what is most important to you, you need to figure out when you’re going to do what.
My suggestion is that you take the activities that will have the biggest LONG TERM impact and you put them as the first things that you do every single day. The most important part of this is the long term impact part. Many times, if we don’t get instant gratification from something, we tend to not see the value doing it right now and tend to put it off until… never. This isn’t what you’re going to do though.
Research tells us that the most willpower that we have is in the morning. And throughout the day we use it most of it up, we have less and less of it by the time we’re ready to go to bed at night. So its essential that you start your day off doing the things that will have the highest long term impact in your life. That way, you have a higher probability of making sure that you do it every day.
If you can’t do it first thing in the morning, you need to schedule for a specific time. Sometimes, there are things that don’t make a lot of sense to do everyday or that you can’t do until later. For instance, you might be part of a exercise program that meets in the evening or if you’re doing some type of really hard workout, it may not make sense for you to do it everyday.
The point isn’t to get caught up in the rules of specifics of doing anything in particular but to schedule an actual time that you’re going to do the activity. You have to have the attitude that you’re going to do it no matter what during that time and you’ll have a much higher degree of success. It will also keep the distractions that others throw at you from running your life.
How Do Your Values Fit into the Bigger Picture
Its important to figure out how the things that are most important to you fit into the bigger picture of life. There are a lot of problems in the world. All you have to do is watch the news or an episode of Jersey Shore to know that we still have a lot of problems that need to be fixed (there’s no doubt about that!).
But seriously, you need to take a good look at what you’re passionate about and figure out how to that fits into solving local and global solutions. How does what you do help solve the problems of crime, hunger, the political system, the educational system, the economy system, ecology… how can you align what you love with making the world a better place?
If you really want to strengthen your passion, figure out how your passion fits into the bigger picture of life. As I said before, the world needs you to figure yourself out. But it doesn’t stop there. And as much as the world needs you to help yourself, you need to align yourself with a bigger world view.
It will strengthen and empower you. It will make what you do in your life so much more worth it. Once you’ve figured out and started living by your passion, take it to the next level and begin contributing to the world. Everyone wants to leave a legacy and this will help you do it.
Does focusing on contributing to the world really matter that much?
Absolutely. When you start giving back to the world, you’ll find that life will become a lot more meaningful. When you help others, you develop a psychological connection with them. This brings continuity to you life. This may sound a little weird but stick with me on this one.
There’s an old saying that goes, “If you lay down with dogs, you come up with fleas.” That’s a very crude way of saying that the people you spend time with influence who you are. There’s been some research done that insists that if you take the top five people you spend the most time with, and divide their personalities, traits and behaviors by five, that’s a very strong indicator of who you are.
When you help influence someone, when you spend time around other people, you become connected to them psychologically. A part of your mental and emotional being is transferred to them. Through this, you develop continuity for yourself through others. And the larger and deeper the influence you have, the more you develop that continuity.
If you really want to live on forever, consider doing it through developing lots of strong psychological connections with other people. The more you contribute to making the world a better place, the more of you, psychological, will live on through the deeds that you’ve created in the world around you.
Strive to make the world a better place. But first start with yourself. Get yourself together, figure out your passions, figure out your life, plan and schedule creating an amazing life for yourself, then get busy using your passions to create a better world for other people.
Do one at a time, do it deliberately, go all in and don’t look back. If you decide, right now, to change your life and start living with passion. A couple years will go by and when you run into people that you used to know, who are still stuck in the same system, slaving themselves away to things that have meaning for them in their lives, you will notice a dramatic difference in who you are and where you’ve gone. Don’t this slip away from you.
If you begin spending more time doing the things that are most important to you, you will immediately begin living with more passion in your life.
The most important thing that you can do right now is discover what your passions are and begin to focus solely on them. If you’d like help in discovering your passions, just sign up for my newsletter with the form at the bottom of the page.
